Grant Recipient Spotlight – Shanta Failey
As you may have heard, Shanta Failey is the most recent surgical grant recipient of the WLFSA. Shanta’s grant was funded in September of 2013. I took some time to ask Shanta a few questions about her journey so far:
Connections: Hi Shanta! Congratulations on your surgery, and I hope that you’re recovering well. I’d like to ask you a few questions so our readers can get to know you and your relationship with the WLSFA.
Shanta: Sure, I’d love to!
Connections: How did you find out about the WLSFA and our grant programs?
Shanta: I found it while I was searching on the Internet about WLS.
Connections: Who was your surgeon and what type of surgery did you have?
Shanta: My surgeon was T. Karl Byrne at Medical University of South Carolina. I had a Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (VSG) .
Connections: What advice would you give to other people looking into bariatric surgery?
Shanta: If you feel that surgery is something that will help you regain your health, then by all means pursue it, but make sure you do it for yourself.
Connections: What’s one thing that you’re looking forward to as you move through your bariatric journey?
Shanta: The one thing I’m looking forward to doing is to be able to walk into a room, and not have to stand still for a moment, waiting to catch my breath before I can speak to someone.
Connections: Support is important as part of a successful post op experience. Where do you get the majority of your support from?
Shanta: I have a huge support group. My friends and family are my biggest supports, and the bariatric support group at MUSC has been amazing. And last but not least, the members of the WLSFA have been amazing with all that they do.
Connections: There are a number of different resources available for people to use as sources of recipes, tips, and product reviews. What are some of the resources that you use most frequently?
Shanta: I use Celebrate brand vitamins and protein shakes. For other sources of information and recipes, I rely on my bariatric friends, groups, and web resources.
Thanks for your time Shanta. I’m sure our readers are glad to get to know a little bit more about you. Look forward to getting to know more about you and cheering you on along your journey!
