We are happy to announce our eighth grant recipient Ms. Jackie Jackson. Jackie is the last grant recipient to be approved from our first grant cycle that ran from August 15 of 2011 until December 31st. Like many, Jackie’s struggled to gain access to weight loss surgery with no success. Like many her insurance exempted any medical treatment for obesity. Jackie’s bariatric surgeon Dr.John Oldham referred Jackie to our grant program and told us how Jackie regularly attends their monthly support meeting and had never given up hope of getting surgery. We are so pleased to welcome Dr. Oldham and Bluegrass Bariatric Surgical Associates the into the WLSFA network of care.

In Jackie’s own words…

My name is Jackie Jackson. I’m 36 years old. I live in Louisville Kentucky. I am a hardworking mother of two children one of which has special needs.I am currently employed at Josephs Salon and Spa were my profession is manicures and pedicures and I love my job! I am currently pursuing a vertical sleeve surgery with Dr. Oldham at Baptist East Hospital. It has been four years and counting that I have been fighting to get this surgery done. Unfortunately I have an exclusion in my insurance plan. I went through several appeals to try and get my weight loss surgery approved with no success. I felt like there was no place left to turn. I had exhausted all of my options. I was out of ideas and trying not to give up hope. I was surfing a website called obesityhelp.com and came across the WLSFA and the story of the twin sisters who had gone through many of the things I was going though trying to get weight loss surgery. I learned that Connie received a grant from the foundation. I thought what are the chances of me trying this? So I applied for a grant after my Dr. Referred me to the grant program. Little did I know I would be approved for a grant! With the help of the WLSFA, Dr. John Oldham and Karen Sparks the bariatric coordinator at Baptist East Hospital. I will achieve my goals. It’s all about the support and how determined I am through my journey. With the help of the WLSFA, I never would have dreamed in a million years I would be were I am at today. I look forward to the time when I can reap the benefits from this surgery. I want to thank everyone who has supported me from the beginning and continues to support me throughout this process. I’m thankful to have helped alot of people now and will continue to help others through my new journey soon to come. I know this surgery will save my life. It doesnt stop here! Sincerely Jackie Jackson

Congratulations to Jackie! I am so happy for you! I am so glad that an organization like this exists and it is wonderful!! I think our insurance companies are wrong for not helping more people get WLS. I had to pay for mine in Mexico and I barely had the money to do it but I know there are some people out there that can’t even scrap up the extra money to go to Mexico. I never thought I could afford it even in MX but I got lucky. I am SO glad you are getting surgery and I hope it’s everything you want it to be. The VSG is a great surgery and I’m so very pleased with mine. I wish you ALL of the best in your upcoming surgery and hope everything goes great for you.
