The Weight Loss Surgery Foundation of America’s annual conference is being held at Bally’s in Las Vegas from May 17th-May 19th. The conference is the largest gathering of patients, doctors, surgeons, and industry professionals in the country providing education, resources, and fostering community and support. As the conference date draws closer, news of Governor Chris Christie’s LAP-BAND surgery was announced via various media outlet sources today. The WLSFA fully supports and endorses Governor Christie’s decision.

The Washington Post reports that “Christie said that he had done it because he wanted to be healthier in order to be around for his kids.” While many will speculate that it is a strategic move for a 2016 Presidential bid, the WLSFA applauds his decision to tackle obesity head-on to better his quality of health for both himself and his family.

The news was announced today just as Carnie Wilson is scheduled to appear on the CBS television program “The Talk” to discuss her role as WLSFA National Ambassador of Hope and keynote speaker at this year’s conference in Las Vegas. Weight Loss Surgery Foundation of America Founder Antonia Namnath says,”Carnie is a pioneer for many weight loss surgery patients. Her willingness to be public and open about her weight and her surgery paved the way for so many people to take control of their weight, their health, and their lives. The Mother of All Meet & Greets is a Fundraising event?

Each year there are many fundraiser held across the country to support the programs of the WLSFA. Chapters host fundraiser, Individuals host fundraiser and groups of fellow patients raise funds for the WLSFA. The Mother of All Meet & Greets is the only National Fundraiser held annually by the WLSFA and raises the lions share of our grant funds! By attending the event your dollars bring lifesaving medical treatment to people suffering from morbid obesity with no way to gain access to the surgery they so desperately need!

As you enjoy this years event keep the fundraising fact in mind. Our event is put together by a 100% volunteer staff. Our volunteers have worked untold hours and we are very proud of all the people who have invested their time, talents and efforts to make this event the success it has been year after year! The Documentary Surviving to Thriving embedded below was filmed over two years ago in October of 2010. Connie has since had her weight loss surgery via the WLSFA Alice Neff Grant and reconstructive plastic surgery on her own the beginning of this year. Many people ask us for updates about Connie and we are happy to report Connie is now the healthy active person she dreamed of being while making this documentary. Connie and her husband Alfred will join us in Las Vegas at our annual fundraiser the Mother of All Meet & Greets. With the continued help of BariatricTV we will film an updated interview with Connie to append to the end of the film. The WLSFA is very proud of Connie and all of our grant recipients. This film will be updated with current footage in May of this year stay tuned!
The film documents an emotional, complex, and powerfully moving story of morbidly obese identical twin sisters Rosemary and Connie. Rosemary was covered by insurance and her life was dramatically changed as a result of her weight loss surgery six years ago. Connie, desperately needing the weight loss surgery to improve her health, has been denied over and over again. The film illustrates the complexity of morbid obesity, the impact on a patient’s quality of life, and the struggle to escape it. Additionally, Connie is highlighted as the first-ever Inaugural Recipient of the Weight Loss Surgery Grant awarded by the WLSFA, made it finally possible for her to have weight loss surgery. Well Known Bariatric Surgeon and Author Dr. Garth Davis and Dr. Robert Davis of the Davis Medical Clinic in Houston Texas performed Connie’s surgery on March 23, 2011.

Important Grant Program Update: The WLSFA is excited to update you on the progress of our most recent grant recipient Jackie Jackson! Jackie is our first VSG or vertical sleeve gastrectomy weight loss surgery and the first grant for the state of Kentucky! We thank Dr. John Oldham and Baptist Hospital for their contributions and participation in this grant. All these wonderful firsts have lead to Jackie Jackson’s report that she is no longer in need of her diabetes medicine! Jackie is very happy to be on the path to a healthy new life and I am sure I speak for all of us when I say WELCOME TO THE LOSERS BENCH JJ !

VERY IMPORTANT Meet & Greet Attendee Updates: CARNIE WILSON DETAILS As many know our National Ambassador of Hope Carnie Wilson will be with us at the event this year. Carnie will be speaking at our Gala on Saturday evening May 18 starting at 8:00 PM. After Carnie’s keynote address, Carnie will take questions from the audience. After the Q & A is over Carnie has agreed to take pictures on the red carpet and meet as many attendees as possible.

Happily we are expecting several hundred attendees. Logistically there is no way all of you will have the opportunity to pose and meet with Carnie. The WLSFA Event Committee has decided to give everyone in attendance a fair chance by drawing names lottery style from the attendees registered by Thursday May 16, 2013. This lottery will hold the names of all attendees NOT going to the special VIP Lunch with Carnie fundraiser on Friday at noon as they will already have had a chance to meet Carnie. The WLSFA Board members will be excluded from the drawing as well. The people drawn will be given special passes at registration to allow them to get in line for those photos and Carnie hugs! Jackie Jackson’s Weight Loss Surgery Grant is Funded and other exciting WLSFA news!

8th Grant Funded!

On January 28th, 2013 Jackie Jackson was notified she is the 8th grant recipient awarded funds for surgery by WLSFA.org! Dr. John Oldham of Bluegrass Bariatric Surgical Associates in Louisville, Kentucky is Jackie’s surgeon and she is thrilled and anxiously looking forward to her weight loss surgery after applying in the first grant cycle. This is the first funded grant in the state of Kentucky and the surgery will be scheduled and announced in the next month. Texas Association of Bariatric Surgeons and Allied Health Professionals Welcomes the WLSFA

Antonia Namnath, founder and CEO of the WLSFA just returned from Dallas where she addressed the Texas Association of Bariatric Surgeons and Allied Health Professionals. TABS was co-founded by WLSFA Board member Cyndi Inkpen and this was the second year the WLSFA was given the opportunity to speak to Bariatric Surgeons and Allied Health Professionals. During the talk Antonia was pleased to announce Dr. Adam Smith of Fort Worth Lap Band who joined the WLSFA Network of Care. Dr. Smith’s practice performs several types of weight loss surgery and Dr. Smith is a post-op Lap Band patient! We thank WLSFA Board member Sandi Henderson for introducing and inviting Dr. Smith to participate in our program.

Antonia also introduced the WLSFA Lone Star Texas Group which consists of WLSFA local area chapters being developed in cities across the state of Texas. Local Chapters raise funds for local people and “Live Local, Give Local” was the phrase of the day. The Davis Clinic in Houston, Texas was the first practice to join and launch our Houston Chapter.
